Discovering Rome in the Summer Months

Visiting Rome during the summer months has its many advantages. Think warm, balmy nights, sipping wine at the outdoor cafes, and strolling or lazing alongside the city’s stunning sights - from the Colosseum and the Spanish Steps to the gorgeous Trevi Fountain. There’s just something about visiting ‘The Eternal City’ during that magical time of year when the hours - and all the pleasures that fill it - seem to stand still.

There’s even more reason to visit Italy’s capital city during the summer months. Summertime brings countless festivals and events to Rome, enabling visitors and locals alike to relish arts and cultures from all over the world. One such festival is the Estate Romana Festival (the Roman Summer Festival), which is hosted from late June to early September of each year.

This particular festival offers various musical events - including classical, jazz and rock - as well as theatre, cinema, sports, literary meetings and children’s events throughout the city. What’s more, events take place at some of the most famous spots around Rome, enabling festival-goers to enjoy the best of the city alongside festival offerings. For instance, giant, open-air screens are erected in Vittoria Emmanuele Square, on the River Tiber Island and on Gianicolo Hill to show popular films at late night viewings.

A fixture in the city for 31 years, the Estate Romana Festival is still going strong - and the 2009 edition is now in the midst of planning an array of exciting events. If you’re planning to attend this year’s Estata Romana festival, you’ll want to ensure your travel arrangements are made well ahead of time. Summer is already a busy season for tourists in Rome - so when festivals such as Estata Romana arrive in the city, crowds multiply.

Once you’ve decided upon the best time of year to take your flights to Rome, you can then start looking into suitable accommodation. In fact, because Estate Romana is hosted throughout the city centre, you’re likely to be situated near a handful of events and attractions, no matter where you choose to stay.

Regardless of whether you choose to visit Rome for the festivities, or simply to become immersed in the wide range of sights and attractions available, you are sure to find something that appeals to you. Therefore, it is perhaps advised that you plan your itinerary well in advance, to ensure you get everything fitted into your trip!
