Bike your way to a healthier lifestyle

One of the best ways to stay fit, while at the same time enjoying copious amounts of fresh air and getting to see the hidden beauty of Britain is to get out your bike and take to the nation’s network of town and countryside cycle ways.

Throughout the UK there is an established network of cycle routes, and recent government initiatives will ensure that many town and city councils build and maintain even more. In terms of working out, cycling is great for exercising many different muscles and therefore will help you keep extremely fit.

If you are a bit unsure about whether you’ll find the cycle tracks interesting or even difficult to negotiate you’ll soon be able to take a look online before you set off. That’s because Google are sending out an army of specialist tricycle riders to get photographs of Britain’s countryside and urban footpaths to be posted on Google Street Maps. Although, hard to reach and narrow footpaths will not be pictured, many of the country’s dedicated cycle ways will be snapped allowing riders to examine images of their intended routes before they set off!

Also happening during the summer of 2009 is an exciting initiative between Sky TV and British Cycling – the internationally recognised governing body of cycling in Great Britain, which will see a cycling recreation programme implemented in five major British cities; London, Glasgow, Manchester, Leicester and Preston. Thousands of riders of all abilities will be encouraged to turn out for mass Sunday rides under controlled and safe conditions; everyone and anyone is invited to take part.

Of course, if you own health insurance check whether your policy allows for participation in such mass events, and if not ensure that you arrange additional cover before taking part, especially if you a complete novice. Get that out of the way and you can enjoy the fun on your bike.

Even though these exciting cycling events have only been announced in five big cities for now, others are expected to follow as more people will be encouraged to take to two wheels rather than four. For, not only is cycling eco-friendly, it also saves money. The cost of petrol is expected to keep on rising and may force people out of cars and onto bicycles through economic necessity and not through choice. Although, there are no definitive figures easily available on how many local councils are actively encouraging their residents to opt for a healthy lifestyle and live life on two wheels, or how many dedicated cycle ways are being built it is definitely a central government aim to encourage both. Who knows, once the cycle trails are in place cyclists just may well follow!
